Applying for a Japan Student Visa
When applying for a Japan Student Visa, you need to prepare several documents to support your application. These documents include:
- Student Visa Application Form: Downloadable from the official website.
- Valid Passport: Along with photocopies.
- Passport-size Photographs: Specifications include dimensions of 4cm x 3cm, taken within the last three months, with a plain white background, neutral facial expression, and good quality.
- Certificate of Eligibility: Provided by your school after you submit necessary documents.
- Letter of Admission: From the Japanese educational institution, detailing the course duration and specifics.
- Academic/Professional Qualifications: Such as diplomas, transcripts, etc.
- Financial Proof: Demonstrating the ability to meet financial requirements, which is about 2 Million Yen for one year. This can be shown through bank or income statements, scholarship proof, sponsorship letter, etc.
- Additional Documents: Such as a Letter of Invitation, Letter of Guarantee, Motivational/Cover Letter, if required.
After gathering the required documents, you need to follow these steps:
- Obtaining the Certificate of Eligibility: Your school handles this process on your behalf. It typically takes one to three months.
- Submitting the Visa Application: Contact a Japanese Embassy or Consulate near you to submit your visa application along with the necessary documents.
- Visa Interview (if necessary): Attend an interview or submit additional documents if requested.
- Collecting the Visa: Once processed, collect your passport with the visa from the Embassy or Consulate.
Upon entering Japan with a Student Visa, you’ll receive a Landing Permit. Additionally, you’ll need to obtain a Residence Card and possibly a Re-Entry Permit within 14 days of arrival.
Extending a Japan Student Visa:
You can apply for a visa extension up to 90 days before it expires at the local Immigration Office. Required documents include an Application Form, passport, Residence Card, academic certificates, financial proof, etc. The extension is typically processed within two weeks to a month.
Japan Student Visa Fees:
The fees for Japan Visas vary depending on the type and number of entries. Single-entry visas cost 3,000 Yen, double-entry or multiple-entry visas cost 6,000 Yen. Transit visas cost 700 Yen. However, the fee is only payable upon approval of the visa application.
Working With a Japan Student Visa:
A Japan Student Visa doesn’t permit work. To work, you need a Work Permit from the local Immigration Office. Working hours are restricted to 28 hours per week, and certain occupations are prohibited. After graduation, you can apply to change your visa category to work, provided you have a work contract.
