Apply for a student visa in Austria

 

Types of Austria Student Visas:

There are two main types of student visas for Austria:

  1. Visa C (Short-term): This visa allows you to study in Austria for up to three months.
  2. Visa D (Long-term): This visa is valid for up to six months and can be converted to a Student Resident Permit for longer studies.

Requirements for Austria Student Visa:

To apply for an Austria student visa, you need the following:

  1. Valid Passport with at least two empty pages and not expiring during your stay.
  2. Completed Visa Application Form.
  3. Schengen travel insurance covering emergencies up to €30,000.
  4. Recent Identity Pictures following Schengen visa picture guidelines.
  5. Proof of Accommodation, either on-campus housing or a rental agreement.
  6. Itinerary for your travel, including flight details.
  7. Sufficient Financial Means:
    • Students under 24: €552.53/month.
    • Students 24 and older: €1,000.48/month.
    • Couples: €1,578.36/month.
    • Additional €37/month for each child.
  8. Proof of Admission and Paid Tuition Fee from the Austrian University.
  9. University Records from previous institutions (if applicable).

Application Process:

  1. Find a suitable university in Austria and apply for acceptance.
  2. Fill out the visa application form.
  3. Gather all required documents, ensuring they are in English or German and legalized if necessary.
  4. Schedule an appointment at the nearest embassy or consulate to submit your application.
  5. Prepare for an interview, where you’ll discuss your study plans and reasons for choosing Austria.

Where to Apply:

All visa applications are processed by Austrian embassies or consulates in your country of residence.

When to Apply:

Apply for an Austria student visa at least three weeks before your planned departure.

After Arrival in Austria:

Upon arrival, register at the local registration office. If you hold a D visa, you can apply for a residence permit for students. To qualify, complete Module 1 of the integration agreement, demonstrating basic knowledge of German.

Processing Time:

Austria student visas typically take 2 to 4 weeks to process. Ensure your contact information is up-to-date for notification from the embassy.

Working with a Student Visa:

You can work up to 10 to 20 hours per week with a special C or D student visa that includes a work permit. Employers must apply for your work permit at the Public Employment Service (AMS).

Extending Your Visa:

You can apply for a visa extension with valid reasons and good progress in your studies. Alternatively, apply for a residence permit for students.

Working After Studies:

With a residence permit, you can work in Austria after graduation. Otherwise, you may apply for a job seeker’s visa for six months while seeking employment. If successful, apply for a Red-White-Red Card for long-term work and stay in Austria.
