Changes to Student and Temporary Graduate visas in 2024 have been announced in Australia.
Recent announcements from the Australian Government highlight changes to their Migration Strategy, aiming to enhance the integrity and quality of international education programs while supporting the career aspirations of students and graduates. Key changes include:
New Financial Capacity Requirement: Effective May 10, 2024, Student and Student Guardian visa applicants must meet a financial requirement of $29,710. This applies to applications lodged from this date onward.
Reinstatement of TOEFL iBT: TOEFL iBT is now accepted for student visa purposes by Australian universities. Tests taken between July 26, 2023, and May 4, 2024, are invalid, while those taken before July 26, 2023, remain valid for two years.
Introduction of New Genuine Student (GS) Requirement: From March 23, 2024, the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) requirement is replaced by targeted questions under the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.
New English Language Requirements: Effective March 23, 2024, updated English language requirements apply to Student Visa and Temporary Graduate Visa applications.
Upcoming changes include:
Reduction in Temporary Graduate Visa Length: Post-study work visa durations will be altered, providing opportunities for valuable work experience and potential pathways to permanent residency, including the introduction of a new 4-year Skills in Demand visa.
New Age Limit for Temporary Graduate Visa: The maximum age for Temporary Graduate visa applicants will be reduced to 35 years or under, effective July 1, 2024.
These changes aim to refine Australia’s migration policies while maintaining its attractiveness as a destination for international students and skilled workers.
