Student Visa and Residence Permit for Hungary
Many international students pursuing studies in Hungary will require a residence permit to ensure they can stay in the country for the duration of their chosen program.
To complete your Hungary student visa application, ensure you include the following documents:
- Valid Passport: Original passport with a validity of at least 1.5 years and two blank pages.
- Visa Application Form: Fill out the student visa application form accurately.
- Passport-size Photographs: Two recent photos adhering to Schengen requirements.
- Medical Insurance: Confirmation of medical insurance coverage, either provided by the university or with travel insurance of €30,000 valid for the entire Schengen Area.
- Letter of Acceptance: From the Hungarian university, detailing class start date and payment information.
- Proof of Accommodation: Rental agreement and property document if self-accommodating; note university-provided accommodation in invitation letter.
- Proof of Paid Fee: Except for Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship recipients.
- Financial Status: Translated bank reference and statement for the last six months.
- University Letter: Providing institution details, including contacts, in English.
- Sponsorship Letter: If lacking personal income, parents’ commitment to cover expenses.
- Copies of Relevant Documents: Passport pages, Schengen visas, ID card, travel health insurance, flight ticket, marriage certificate with translation (if applicable).
Application Process for Hungary Student Visa:
- Accept Invitation: Enroll in a Hungarian university and obtain an acceptance letter.
- Book Appointment: Schedule a visa appointment with the nearest Hungarian embassy or consulate.
- Complete Application: Fill out the form and attach required documents.
- Await Response: Embassy will notify you of the visa decision via email or SMS.
Note: Submit scanned documents and application form via email five days before the visa appointment for expedited processing.
Processing Time and Appointment Booking
Visa processing usually takes about a month but can extend up to 60 days. Applicants should apply well in advance and may need to book appointments up to six weeks in advance, as appointment slots can be limited.
Arriving in Hungary:
Upon arrival, secure accommodation and register with the Office of Immigration and Nationality within 93 days. Enjoy free medical care as a student.
Working in Hungary:
EU students can work without restrictions. Non-EU students require a permit and can work up to 24 hours per week during studies and 90 days per year outside study terms.
Family Members:
Family visa applications are required for accompanying family members to Hungary. Once granted, they can enter the country.
Appealing Visa Rejection
In the event of a visa rejection, applicants can:
- Correct errors or provide missing documents and reapply, though the application fee is non-refundable.
- Appeal the decision by writing to the Hungarian embassy or consulate, with an appeals fee payable, regardless of the outcome.
