Types of Lithuania Student Visas
Depending on the duration of your study program, you can apply for one of the following permits:
- National D Visa: This allows you to stay if your study program lasts up to a year.
- Temporary Residence Permit: For study programs lasting longer than a year. Note that you’ll initially receive a national D visa to enter Lithuania while your residence permit application is processed.
How to Obtain a Lithuania Student Visa?
Here are the steps:
- Select a Study Program and University: You must first be accepted to a university before applying for a student visa.
- Gather Required Documents: Alongside general visa requirements, include a letter of acceptance from the Lithuanian university and proof of language proficiency.
- Apply for the Visa: Check with the embassy or consulate for online application options. Fill out the form, print it, and submit it along with other required documents.
- Attend the Visa Interview: Be prepared for a brief interview regarding your application and study plans in Lithuania. Biometric data may also be collected.
Document Checklist for Lithuania Student Visa
- Complete and sign the National visa application form.
- Provide one recent passport photo, sized 35×45 cm, with a colorful background.
- Submit a valid travel document (passport) meeting the following criteria:
- Must contain at least 2 blank pages.
- Issued within the previous 10 years.
- Validity extending at least three months after the intended departure from the Schengen Area.
- Obtain valid health insurance from an approved list of Indian travel insurance companies, covering the duration of stay with a minimum coverage of EUR 30,000. The insurance must be valid in all Schengen Area countries.
- Present a confirmed air ticket reservation.
- Submit the mediation letter electronically through MIGRIS (https://www.migracija.lt/en) by the Lithuanian scholastic institution. Provide the Visa Office with the mediation application number.
- Provide proof of financial means for living in Lithuania (sufficient means of subsistence equal to 0.5 of the minimum monthly wage per month) and for returning to the home country or another foreign country (sufficient funds required to return equal to 1 minimum monthly wage):
- Original private bank statement showing transactions in the last three months, duly stamped and signed by the bank.
- Indian income tax return acknowledgment for the last two assessment years.
- If sponsored, include an Affidavit of Sponsorship from parents/relatives and their proof of financial means.
- Include documents providing educational background, legalized.
- Pay the consular fee.
Processing Time
Student visa processing typically takes between two weeks to two months. For a temporary residence permit, it can take up to four months under regular processing and two months under urgent processing.
Upon Arrival in Lithuania
If your stay exceeds a year, you’ll need to apply for a temporary residence permit through the online MIGRIS system.
Cost of a Lithuania Student Visa
The national D student visa costs €120, though exchange students may be exempt.
Duration of the Visa
A long-stay visa is valid for up to one year. For longer stays, a temporary residence permit is required, valid for the duration of your study program, up to two years.
Working with a Student Visa
Part-time work (up to 20 hours per week) is permitted for Bachelor’s students, while Master’s and Doctoral students can work full-time.
Family Accompaniment and Visa Extension
Family members cannot accompany you under a student visa. Visa extension is not possible; instead, you must apply for a temporary residence permit.
